Advising on seasonal plates: Match use, parking and laid-up cover

Compare seasonal use, parking and confirmed cover with a year-round option for your customer in Germany.

Put actual use before the seasonal period

A convertible usually stays parked in winter; a motorhome is mainly used for summer holidays. A seasonal number plate can quickly seem attractive. As an intermediary, help the customer decide more precisely: does a fixed operating period fit actual use, where will the vehicle stay outside that period and what insurance is agreed for it? Together, those answers support a sound comparison with year-round registration and insurance.

Do not start with the shortest possible period. Ask when the vehicle is actually needed, including trips, regular use and foreseeable appointments at either end of the season. Distinguish firm plans from spontaneous possibilities. Someone wanting winter motorhome trips has different needs from someone deliberately parking it throughout those months.

A seasonal plate concerns a fixed period, not the weather on a particular weekend. Section 10(3) of Germany’s FZV sets a period in whole months, from at least two to no more than eleven months. It also regulates use and parking on public roads within that period. Explain the connection before the customer associates a short season only with a lower desired premium.

Discuss the months at either end

Ask specifically about undecided months. July and August may be certain while April or October trips remain open. A calendar of actual plans is more useful than simply saying the vehicle is used in summer. Mark uncertain months as open rather than silently removing them for a seemingly more attractive offer.

This example is entirely fictional. A motorhome owner initially plans April to October. During the conversation, he mentions sometimes wanting to depart in March and considering a fixed November appointment involving the vehicle. There are now at least two usage plans to compare. Have the requested periods assessed and compare them with a year-round option on the same professional basis.

The customer chooses according to priorities. They may consciously forgo the extra months, or that flexibility may be essential. Explain both choices and their actual consequences. Assuming use will be rare does not answer the question: one planned appointment outside the period may matter more than many unused days within it.

Include the parking location in the decision

Outside the stated period, FZV section 10(3) generally prohibits driving or parking the vehicle on public roads. The provision contains special rules for individual journeys; do not derive individual permission to drive from them. For the ordinary decision, first establish which suitable parking location is actually available throughout the inactive period.

Ask about the place and its availability. A garage that might be available differs from a firmly agreed space. Under insurance conditions, a private parking space may be assessed differently from a garage or enclosed site. Obtain a description of the actual situation and check it against the intended insurer’s requirements. Calling a space private does not itself confirm suitable laid-up cover.

The duration of the parking right matters too. If the garage is available only until January but the season starts in April, the plan has a gap. Desired insurance does not close that gap. Discuss another genuinely available space or a different operating period and clarify the requirements affected by each.

Explain laid-up cover specifically

Seasonal use does not automatically establish what damage is insured outside the season. HUK-COBURG explains that laid-up cover varies between insurers. For its own arrangement, it describes continuation of previously agreed fully comprehensive cover and requires an indoor storage space or enclosed parking site. Treat this as an insurer example, not a promise that every seasonal policy has the same scope.

Ask what the proposed policy actually covers during the inactive period: which insurance sections continue, which location requirements apply and which agreed excess matters? Relate the answer to the particular tariff. General advertising about laid-up insurance does not replace that link. The customer should understand which desired protection the selected offer includes.

Separate fully comprehensive cover during the season from its scope during the inactive period. One answer does not establish the other. Explain differences between offers before comparing premiums. A less expensive seasonal offer may have a different contractual basis; make that visible so the comparison supports the real decision.

Compare using consistent information

Keep vehicle, policyholder, actual drivers and requested protection clear. Do not change the seasonal period and other important details simultaneously without explanation. Otherwise, a lower premium may be attributed entirely to the plate. Identify each change and obtain calculations using the correct information.

Establish mileage from actual plans too. A shorter season does not automatically mean fewer kilometres. A motorhome can concentrate long journeys into a few months. Ask about planned distances and the appropriate declaration in the chosen process. Do not simply take a proportion of an annual figure because the vehicle is parked for several months.

Compare prices for the same period with a clear description of scope. Do not place one payment for one option beside a differently defined figure for the other. Show which amount covers which period. Label provisional calculations and name the outstanding condition rather than presenting a possible premium as settled.

Separate policy expiry from the operating period

The period on the plate and the policy’s expiry are different details. HUK-COBURG explicitly notes different possible expiry dates and cancellation deadlines for seasonal policies. Do not apply a commonly mentioned switching routine to a specific seasonal policy. Check its documents and obtain insurer confirmation if expiry is unclear.

For an existing seasonal policy, begin with the actual position: registered period, protection agreed and change requested. Comparing an existing contract requires different preparation from planning seasonal registration for the first time. Match documents to the vehicle and identify the requested difference before obtaining a calculation for a new period.

Describe a wish for an earlier first journey next year precisely. The customer may be responding to a one-off change or want a permanently longer period. Clarify the objective and necessary coordination with insurer and registration authority. Advice about a desired period does not itself change registration or confirm a new cover start.

Revisit changes to the parking plan

A previously workable plan can change: rented winter parking disappears, another vehicle is bought or a trip moves. Encourage the customer to raise changes before implementing them. You can have the affected policy questions assessed. Do not reuse an answer about the previous location as an unqualified answer for a new one.

Stay specific: from which date is the space unavailable, where will the vehicle go and does intended use also change? These facts connect but may require different answers. The insurer assesses cover at the proposed location; the authority clarifies registration questions. Keep their responses distinct and understandable.

A year-round option can be useful for comparison when winter parking remains unresolved. It does not replace checking the actual location and insurance needs. Present it as an option requiring assessment. Promise neither acceptance nor general claim payment; prepare the choice using genuinely available usage options and specific offers.

Also discuss who may actually use the parking space. A family member may have offered one without clarifying its use for this vehicle. Ask the customer to agree that practical point with the authorised person. You do not need other people’s private documents. The comparison needs a reliably described, genuinely available parking arrangement rather than an assumed promise from an earlier conversation.

Let the customer explain the chosen option

Before deciding, the customer should describe three things in their own words: when they want to use the vehicle, where it stays during the other months and what cover is confirmed. Ask about the uncertain edge month or actual parking space. This reveals whether the option fits daily life or an important condition still needs clarification.

Record the chosen option and its supporting details: desired period, actual parking solution, protection discussed and outstanding confirmations. Use your firm’s protected processes and only necessary data. A calendar or comparison note is a recommended organisational aid. It replaces neither insurer assessment nor necessary registration coordination.

The family can later understand why it chose that period. If circumstances change, advice resumes at the affected assumption, such as an extra travel month or lost parking space. The customer need not reconstruct the entire choice. Your comparison stays grounded in actual use and makes both a consciously chosen restriction and a preference for year-round flexibility understandable.

Develop vehicle contacts through professional advice

webRichtung enquiries supply vehicle type, cover preference, reason, registration location and contact details. They do not promise a specific season or winter parking information. Establish those details and appropriate insurance through your own advice. Selecting camper also does not create a seasonal ordering filter.

Register on the car insurance leads page. The welcome email leads to webRichtung Customer. Select industry, area in Germany, delivery type and monthly limit and see the current price before a binding order. The enquiry opens the conversation; your professional comparison prepares the offer.
