Adjust pension premiums: reduce payments or make the policy paid-up?

Compare needed payment relief with remaining benefits, supplementary cover and restarting conditions to explain the actual policy options.

When a customer can no longer afford, or no longer wants to pay, their private pension premium, a clear comparison of possible relief helps. A lower premium and continuation without further premiums serve different purposes. You show which future payment disappears, what benefit remains and what needs clarification for restarting payments. The customer can assess the consequences before a change is implemented.

Define the relief actually needed

First ask whether the customer wants to bridge a temporary gap or permanently reduce regular expenses. A limited cash shortfall needs different consideration from an unaffordable long-term premium. Have them specify the desired relief and period. If uncertain, keep both visibly provisional. The largest possible reduction has no value in itself if it misses the relief actually needed.

Distinguish lower ongoing payments from an immediate cash payout too. Wanting monthly relief does not yet mean wanting to end the policy. Someone needing money for a one-off expense might not have their real question answered by making the policy paid-up. Establish this distinction at the start, rather than letting two tasks merge into the general wish for more room financially.

Next establish the actual policy status. Are payments unchanged, are premiums already outstanding or has a change been confirmed? These facts affect the enquiry to the insurer. A desired state must not be treated as existing. Assign any arrears or letters to professional examination. You can then discuss real options instead of attaching a plausible-sounding solution to an incorrect starting point.

Consider a lower premium in its own right

Have the actual policy’s options and conditions for reducing premiums checked. Ask about the new amount, effective date and related benefit changes. General product advertising is insufficient; the answer must fit the existing contract. If the requested amount lies outside available options, make that difference visible. Look for a suitable alternative within the actual choices.

A smaller premium may ease the household budget while retaining further payments into the policy. Both sides of the new state must be clear. How much less is paid monthly? What benefit is shown for the changed course? Use a specific statement or calculation. Halving the payment does not authorise you to halve the future benefit yourself. Explain the relationship using the actual policy basis.

Ask about supplementary cover too. Which parts continue after a reduction, at what level, and which changes need separate examination? The customer may see one total premium while associating several benefits with it. Explain consequences for each affected benefit. Relief should not unexpectedly change other protection simply because the conversation discussed only retirement income.

Section 165 VVG governs conversion to paid-up insurance at the end of the current insurance period, provided the agreed minimum benefit is reached. Otherwise it provides for payment of surrender value including profit shares under section 169. The actual minimum requirement is therefore a decisive examination point. Do not promise premium-free continuation as available in every policy without checking.

Have the actual remaining benefit explained for the examined route. Continuing without new premiums differs from continuing the previous payment plan unchanged. The benefit information should reflect that. For policies with profit participation, section 155 VVG distinguishes, among other things, benefits under unchanged and paid-up continuation. This helps assign existing annual-statement figures to the correct scenario.

Examine supplementary benefit consequences against actual conditions here too. Expected retirement benefits and potentially linked additional protection are different subjects. If a supplementary benefit changes or disappears, the customer must understand precisely that. State the consequence with its specific reference. Saying retirement provision remains would be too vague if it implied all benefits stayed unchanged.

Clarify a possible pause and restart separately

As an individual example, Heidelberger Leben’s customer service mentions premium reduction, paid-up continuation and, subject to individual examination, using policy capital against premiums. It also describes restarting conditions. These are that provider’s statements, not universal rights for other contracts.

If relief is temporary, ask about the policy’s available routes and exact consequences. A pause can sound like a simple switch. Instead the decision needs a description: which payment is suspended, what benefit applies during it and what happens afterwards? The name alone does not explain these questions. Keep the confirmed arrangement together with its period.

Make restarting a separate examination step. When is it possible, what declaration is needed and what conditions apply? Also ask whether the previous premium and benefits can actually be restored. Obtain the answer from the individual contract. A non-binding wish to pay more later is not confirmed restoration of the former position. This distinction protects expectations for after the relief period.

If using existing policy capital against premiums is offered, have its effects on capital and benefits explained. The customer may temporarily pay less from the household budget while funding occurs differently inside the contract. That differs from removing all burdens. Present the relief alongside its financing so a smaller bank outflow is not mistaken for unchanged provision without consequences.

A fictional comparison separates payment and benefit

All amounts and periods in this case are freely chosen assumptions, not real policy offers.

A model customer pays €200 monthly and wants six months of household relief. A fictional statement describes reducing payments to €120. Monthly relief would be €80, totalling €480 over six months. Payments would still total €720 during that period. These figures describe payment differences only. The corresponding statement must show future benefits and affected supplementary cover.

A second fictional statement describes an examined route without further premiums for the same period. Against the original plan, six €200 payments disappear: €1,200. This larger relief does not yet explain remaining benefits or restarting. The adviser compares the matching benefit information and conditions separately, instead of declaring the second option better simply because more payment is avoided.

The model conversation reveals the customer seeks €80 monthly relief and particularly wants to understand included supplementary cover. The adviser therefore first checks benefit consequences of the reduced-premium route and asks for restarting conditions. No result is predetermined. The actual response might show another variant needs consideration. The personal financial task guides examination rather than the maximum relief amount.

Use a matching statement rather than inventing benefits

Compare the same period and starting contract. If one calculation describes permanent change and another only a brief period, they answer different questions. Have the difference explained or request matching calculations. Preserve each figure’s label: promised benefit, possible development or actual payment described. The different policy routes become understandable without adding a future return or benefit yourself.

If surrender is discussed too, treat it as a separate decision with separate consequences. Surrender value under section 169 VVG is not simply total premiums paid. The provision governs calculation and conditions for possible deductions, among other things. A specific payout decision requires appropriate current information. A figure in an older letter does not automatically describe a later requested termination date.

Personal tax and other legal effects require assessment for the particular policy by the responsible qualified professionals. Assign open questions precisely: contract condition, benefit calculation or personal consequence? This makes the next step concrete. Instead of being told vaguely that something remains to consider, the customer knows which answer is missing and who should clarify it professionally.

Confirm the chosen change clearly

Before instruction, ask the customer to summarise which premium should apply from when and what benefit consequences they understand. If the answer stops at paying less, return to the affected benefits. Relief is only half the decision. Once both sides are clear, record the specific wish with the matching policy basis. Any later restart receives a separate step explicitly still requiring examination.

After insurer confirmation, compare payment, start date and described benefits with the agreed wish. Do not record an outstanding enquiry as a confirmed policy change. Ask about the exact point of any discrepancy. Your customer can then base current planning on the confirmed position. Your team also has a traceable starting point for discussing continuation, another adjustment or an actually available restart later.

If another payment falls due during examination, clarify the current payment position separately with the insurer. A requested change date does not yet explain treatment of a payment processed meanwhile. Assign it to the actual period rather than silently removing it from the comparison.

At later conversations, first check whether the agreed reason for relief still applies. A new permanent need requires different consideration from the originally planned short bridge. The previous variant remains traceable but is not declared the solution for changed circumstances without examination.
