Fund-linked pension advice: move assets or change future contributions?
Clarify whether a fund change concerns existing assets, future savings contributions or both so the assessed instruction matches the customer’s wish.
“I want another fund” can mean two different instructions in a unit-linked pension policy. Should existing assets be invested differently, or should only future savings contributions take a new direction? Distinguishing these questions avoids a change that misses the customer’s intention. Your advisory value is identifying the money affected and the desired future course before a specific fund change is assessed and instructed.
Split the wish into two questions
First ask what the customer wants to achieve. They may want to redistribute future contributions while leaving existing assets unchanged for now. They may be concerned about the existing assets themselves. Or they may want both examined. These three situations need different instructions. The label fund change is insufficient. Record the intended scope in ordinary language before agreeing on terminology used in the provider’s form.
As an individual example, Heidelberger Leben’s customer service distinguishes switching future savings contributions from shifting existing fund units. It also identifies a particular link between both parts in certain managed arrangements. This describes that provider; actual policy conditions govern the individual case.
Then ask the customer explicitly: “Does your wish concern money already invested, future savings contributions, or both?” This is not investment advice yet. It establishes what the advice concerns. If the customer is unsure, discuss the two tasks separately. They can describe their intention more precisely instead of agreeing to a technical word whose financial effect they understand differently.
Read existing assets and payment flows separately
For existing assets you need an up-to-date statement belonging to the policy. Which funds, units or values are shown, and for what date? An older letter can explain the earlier distribution without necessarily describing today’s holdings. Record source and date together. If the document is insufficiently current, obtain the necessary information before deriving the scope of a change.
Check the allocation set for future savings contributions separately. It need not match the current value distribution of the assets. A future allocation describes a payment flow; a holdings statement describes already allocated assets. Both can be correct and look different. Explain this before the customer reads one percentage as the entire composition of their retirement provision.
Check which quantity is actually meant. The total insurance premium and the savings amount allocated to funds are not identical merely because they share a payment frequency. Use the quantity specifically identified in the documents. If the split is unclear, ask the provider to explain. An assumption you add yourself could distort the explanation even if all percentages add up correctly.
Redistribute only future savings contributions
If the wish concerns only future contributions, describe the result only for them. A new allocation for upcoming payments does not mean existing assets have also moved. Otherwise the customer may expect a wholly new composition and be disappointed by the next statement. Show beforehand what remains unchanged and which payment flow should be allocated differently after the intended effective date.
Check how the policy handles the start of a new contribution allocation. Ask the provider to explain the relevant date and information needed for this instruction. A requested date and a confirmed effective date are different facts. Later checking depends on the actual confirmation. This timing explains why a previously processed payment might still show the old allocation without immediately indicating an error.
Discuss what the customer still intends for the unchanged holdings. Changing only future contributions deliberately limits the instruction. It does not automatically answer every question about existing investments. Record any separate advisory need explicitly. The scope stays clear without implying consent to an assessment of existing assets that never took place in the conversation.
Examine a change to existing assets
If the wish concerns existing holdings, have its scope described precisely. Is part or all of the available assets to be considered? What starting and destination allocation is intended? The description must fit available funds and policy options. Knowing a fund outside the policy does not make it selectable inside the policy. The actual available selection is therefore part of the professional basis for the next step.
Ask how the provider values and settles an instruction. A statement considered beforehand contains a dated value, not automatically the final settlement value of the later transaction. Do not promise an execution sum yourself. Distinguish dates of the wish, instruction and confirmation where they differ. The customer can check whether the confirmed transaction fits the agreed scope without confusing a timing difference with an incorrect instruction.
A holdings change and a new contribution allocation can have separate effects. Ask explicitly whether the existing contribution allocation should remain after the holdings change. A new fund in the portfolio does not necessarily receive every upcoming payment. A lasting new direction may instead concern both. The actual policy design is decisive, especially if a managed arrangement treats them jointly. Have the dependency explained rather than assuming two freely selectable options.
A fictional case distinguishes three instructions
All fund names, amounts and allocations below are fictional and recommend no actual investment.
A model statement shows €60,000 in fund A and €40,000 in fund B. Future monthly savings contributions are assumed to be €200, previously split €100 each between A and B. The customer wants to include fund C in future. For explanation, assume initially that the policy allows separate changes. Whether a real policy allows this and which investment suits the individual requires examination using the actual information.
The first model instruction changes only future contributions: 20 percent to A and 80 percent to C. From the assumed €200, that means €40 and €160. Existing model holdings of €60,000 A and €40,000 B remain unchanged by this instruction. The customer sees that the new C figure describes a future allocation rather than a transfer of all existing assets.
The second model instruction moves only €10,000 of existing assets from A to C. Without value changes, costs or settlement effects, the simple model yields €50,000 A, €40,000 B and €10,000 C. Upcoming €200 contributions retain the old €100 each for A and B. This combination shows why a holdings change alone does not explain a new payment flow.
The third model instruction combines both wishes: the holdings change described and the new contribution split of €40 A and €160 C. The outcome therefore contains two separate statements. The adviser checks whether actual provider documents reproduce both parts correctly or whether a joint managed option imposes other conditions. The model only explains scope. It says nothing about returns, risk suitability or a real transaction’s final value.
Assess the investment before execution
Understanding scope does not replace personal investment advice. Which funds, risks and costs suit the customer and retirement objective needs examination by the qualified professional using the necessary information. Keep this task separate from translating terms. The customer can then recognise whether you are describing the intended transaction or already discussing an adequately assessed recommendation for their situation.
Ask about costs and limits in the actual policy without inferring universal freedom from another provider’s example. What transactions, selection and conditions apply? Even the absence of an additional processing fee would not explain ongoing fund and policy costs. Have each cost item assigned to its own subject. The customer gains useful information without an invented claim of a free investment.
Before instruction, check that the customer’s description and proposed instruction concern the same scope. A brief confirmation might say: “Today we are considering existing assets; at your request, future allocation stays as it is for now.” Alternatively record both parts explicitly. Use the appropriate wording only after clarification. The result must fit policy options without promising freely combinable choices where the actual arrangement binds them together.
After confirmation, compare components, effective date and scope with the agreed instruction. Do not record an unconfirmed change as completed. If something differs, identify the exact allocation and ask the provider. This targeted check protects against unnoticed incorrect implementation while avoiding a new comprehensive investment decision every time a percentage looks different.
Finally ask the customer to explain what changed and what the next statement should show. Distinguishing assets from future contributions indicates that a key part of the explanation has landed. If uncertainty remains, return to the specific money allocation. A general wish for another fund becomes an understandable instruction suitable for professional assessment, with a clear next action and traceable result.
Where several changes are discussed successively, assign each to its version. A later contribution allocation must not silently overwrite an earlier holdings instruction. Ask which previous instruction a new document supplements or replaces. This helps particularly when the customer changes their wish during advice and different documents remain available together.
Keep the original customer description alongside the confirmed outcome too. You can later explain why particular funds remain in the holdings although new savings contributions go elsewhere. Documentation should show the financial relationship and prevent the same confusion in the next conversation.
