Taking a cat abroad: Check duration and reimbursement
Clarify temporary stays, foreign invoices, repatriation and permanent relocation.
A cat owner plans an extended stay abroad and wants to understand existing cover. Your advice needs four separate answers: how long cover applies outside Germany, how foreign invoices are assessed, which documents are needed and what a permanent move changes. Clarifying them separately gives the owner an understandable financial basis for planning and an opportunity to raise contractual questions in time.
Separate travel duration from usual residence
Start with the actual plan: countries, departure with the cat and intended return. Ask whether this is temporary or the policyholder intends to relocate their primary residence. A long holiday and permanent move may look similar but require different answers. A German postal address alone does not establish the situation under the terms.
HanseMerkur’s Premium customer information of February 2026 requires the insured animal’s usual residence to be in Germany. Section 1 paragraph 60 provides worldwide cover for temporary foreign stays of up to six months from departure. Section 12 paragraph 15 instead contains a termination provision when the policyholder moves their primary residence abroad. These are provisions of that version: “worldwide” does not fully explain duration or relocation.
Have the insurer classify uncertain circumstances, such as extended work abroad with no settled return. Do not infer your own continuation approval from a passport, booking or German contact address. The useful answer identifies which described period falls under which provision and which change would need another assessment.
Measure the period from the correct starting point
Record departure and planned return separately from insurance-year dates. In Premium, the six-month foreign period runs from departure. A new insurance year does not automatically answer that time-limit question. Explain which event starts the period before an owner assumes annual renewal starts another foreign allowance.
If the trip is extended, clarify that revised plan specifically. An earlier answer for a shorter stay does not confirm the extension. Ask about the precise limit and options under the actual contract. Do not replace missing confirmation with assumptions about brief visits to Germany; their significance requires explicit assessment of the real circumstances.
Several travel stages also need an understandable timeline. Record where and when the cat is expected to stay and which answer concerns that plan. This does not require a continuous private movement record: use only information actually needed for clarification. The benefit is linking confirmation to the correct stage rather than applying a general answer to arbitrarily changed stays.
Worldwide cover does not mean unlimited reimbursement
Check the basis for assessing foreign veterinary costs. Premium limits reimbursement for treatment abroad to the German veterinary fee schedule. A lawful invoice in the destination country therefore does not establish entitlement to its full amount. The claims department must assess it under the policy. Another tariff requires its own billing provision.
This matters for financial preparation. Sufficient territorial duration can coexist with costs the owner bears personally. Ask separately about insured services, fee assessment and other limits. A high foreign invoice alone proves neither extensive insurance nor a practice’s error. Each applicable basis needs its own explanation.
Do not convert a foreign total into a supposedly certain German reimbursement without grounds. Any illustration must identify a confirmed or expressly assumed eligible sum and additional rules. Currency conversion alone is not a benefit calculation. The owner can then distinguish a planning figure from an amount only established after assessment.
Prepare the foreign invoice documents
Premium allows the insurer to request a veterinary invoice in English for assessment. Explain that requirement before departure where this policy applies. It does not establish which language the foreign practice provides. Clarify how an understandable document can be supplied through the designated process without inventing a promise from the practice.
Keep the invoice linked to the correct animal and actual services. The general evidence clause lists service date, animal identification, diagnosis or findings, individual items and medicines. Its requirement for German fee-schedule codes does not apply to foreign invoices or billing outside that schedule. That does not make the other information irrelevant. Distinguish a waived formal detail from the continuing need to understand the facts.
Explain what the practice supplies and what the insurer decides. A legible invoice is not a coverage confirmation; a general answer about foreign cover cannot replace a missing treatment description. With a query, the owner should know which document to add and why. Do not copy actual health documents into general acquisition lists.
Distinguish treatment travel from an ordinary trip
Premium excludes cover where the foreign stay is solely for treatment or surgery. Ask about the real purpose if advice is prompted by a particular procedure. General temporary-stay cover does not override this boundary. The insurer assesses the individual plan; medical questions belong to the treating professional.
Illness arising later during a holiday is a different account from a trip planned solely for treatment from the outset. Do not equate them merely because the destination is identical. Actual circumstances and policy wording matter. The owner can ask precisely rather than interpreting treatment abroad as permission for every travel purpose.
Where a procedure was known or advised before application, relevant exclusions still require separate examination. Territorial scope does not change earlier knowledge. Explain the levels separately: where cover applies, which treatment is generally included and which individual requirement remains open. Do not delay medically needed care for a desired insurance effect or make it dependent on your own tariff interpretation.
Read repatriation as a separate benefit
Some owners assume overseas cover includes an organised return for the cat. Premium describes repatriation under specific conditions: necessary surgery cannot be performed abroad and its urgency requires ending the temporary stay early. Indemnity is limited to EUR 500 per claim and applies only insofar as no recovery is available under another contract. Care costs during the return are expressly excluded.
Read these requirements together. They promise neither any desired return journey nor unlimited transport arrangements. In a specific case, ask what medical explanation and coordination are needed. Veterinarians assess care; the insurer explains its benefit. Your advice directs the question appropriately without approving transport or its medical suitability yourself.
Separate transport, treatment and care in your explanation too. Their costs and requirements may differ. Confirmation for transport does not automatically answer a carer’s invoice. If that assistance matters, seek an actual offered benefit. A suitable name or general mention of assistance is not evidence of its scope for the trip.
Assess a fictional extended stay
Explicitly fictional example: An owner plans four months abroad with a cat and later considers staying longer. No confirmation exists for the changed period. This describes no real trip or claim.
First assess the original stay under the applicable policy. Then submit the extension as a new timing question. In the Premium example, measure duration from departure. Do not transfer an answer for four months to a longer stay automatically. Separately clarify fee assessment and invoice evidence so timing confirmation is not mistaken for a promise of full reimbursement.
If the owner considers permanent relocation instead of returning, the contractual question changes. They need an answer about relocation and potentially an independent basis for future cover. The earlier holiday plan remains understandable as the previous position but cannot alone support the new decision. Your advice makes that boundary visible and gives a changed life plan the correct insurance question.
Keep invoice changes traceable
If a foreign invoice is later corrected or translated, preserve its link to the original. Ask which version the claims department needs and what explains the change. A different language alone does not mean different treatment. A factual correction may alter the described services and require targeted reassessment.
For billing in another currency, request an explanation of conversion. Keep original invoice and reimbursement amounts distinct. Differences may have various causes; do not simply assume an exchange-rate loss. The department’s breakdown identifies what arises from fee assessment, deductible or another stated basis.
Connect the insurance answer with travel preparation
Record the plan assessed, applicable version and confirmed boundaries. Changes in duration, purpose or residence prompt the corresponding enquiry. Entry requirements and veterinary fitness for travel are assessed independently by the responsible authorities and professionals; insurance confirmation does not answer them. The owner has a clear basis for financial preparation and knows which further questions remain before departure.
